Pre-Meeting Activities

The mission of the Biostatistics, Epidemiology, and Research Design (BERD) Scientific Interest Group (SIG) is to provide a forum for the exchange of information on current approaches to the integration of biostatistics, epidemiology, and research design into clinical and translational science research programs. This encompasses integration in both the practice of research as well as in training and education. Members of the BERD SIG also serve as a resource for the community of clinical and translational scientists. During the annual meeting, the BERD SIG will discuss works in progress, including papers and projects, as well as outreach efforts and plans for future projects and efforts. All interested BERD practitioners are welcome and encouraged to attend.

The Evaluation SIG meeting will include a brief SIG business meeting followed by presentations and discussions of efforts to enhance evaluation processes for translational science. These will include: Translational Science Benefit Model (TSBM) use to plan, track, evaluate, and communicate impact of programs to advance translational science; Participation, Experience and Formation of a Multi-institutional Cross-disciplinary Translational Team (MCTT); Adaptive Capacity and Preparedness Working Group Results Discussion; Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Issues; and Update on the “Concept Mapping of Metrics” Exercise (NCATS/CTSA).

The Clinical Research Professional Taskforce will meet to network and share information. The group will discuss recent efforts that have involved bringing together national experts to discuss emergent issues in hiring, on-boarding and managing and supporting career growth of clinical research professionals.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) defines Regulatory Science as “the science of developing new tools, standards, and approaches to assess the safety, efficacy, quality, and performance of all FDA-regulated products.” The FDA has also identified a series of Focus Areas of Regulatory Science (FARS) for further research, to accelerate the development of innovative products and support the generation of data and methods to inform regulatory decision-making. Both regulatory science and translational science have a shared goal to enhance the continuum of medical product development, ensuring that safe and effective medical products are ultimately available to the public. Achieving this goal requires diverse and adaptive regulatory science education that aligns with these evolving scientific areas and supports trainees across different career stages and paths. The goal of the Regulatory Science SIG is to promote and coordinate Regulatory Science education, training and research by sharing information, best practices, development of resources and launching relevant pilot projects. This SIG meeting will: 1) review current SIG initiatives developing specific educational resources to advance regulatory science, including a Regulatory Science needs assessment and updating Regulatory Science competencies to guide fellowship and internship programs (and other educational resources), 2) highlight new Regulatory Science education and research programs, and 3) discuss future SIG initiatives.

The Research Operations and Administration SIG provides a venue for networking, idea sharing, problem solving and building partnerships among administrators.

PACER, Partners to Accelerate Community Engaged Research, meets to update one another on contributions of the SIG to the impact of community engagement on the field, accomplishments to date, areas for growth, and plans for the coming year.

Explore resources and tips for onboarding new program administrators. 3. Data tracking – how do you do it, what programs do you use, and what advice do you have for others?
