Letter From the President
Collaboration is a key component of all clinical and translational science. It is a skill that needs to be learned and taught to our scholars. But it is also one of those lifelong skills that we need to continue to develop over time. At ACTS, we highly value and promote collaboration with our members, NIH and all other government agencies invested in clinical and translational research, industry and all institutions participating in this endeavor.
Collaboration is a complex skill that includes the ability to form networks, connect with others and communicate effectively. We want ACTS to be the meeting place for clinical and translational research networks. Through our website, social media and events, ACTS provides spaces where different members of the clinical and translational research workforce can come together to improve the health and lives of people. Our goal as an association is to connect people who can work together to find answers to the tough questions on how to translate clinical findings into real world solutions.
We have found that communication has been hard during these pandemic times. We are fortunate to have the tools to continue to meet through online platforms and meetings. But communication in a two-dimensional world is usually not enough for us humans. Our brain is wired to respond to physical proximity and to three-dimensional faces. Without in-person meetings, it is sometimes hard to follow if someone has received all the information needed to continue in a collaboration. This is one of the reasons why we think it is so important to have an in-person Translational Science Meeting in 2022. We expect everyone from the clinical and translational science community to join us in Chicago.
Another important skill to promote collaborations is active listening. ACTS is continuously seeking out your voice, your opinion, and your thoughts on all matters clinical and translational science. We have been listening to what our members want from us. We know you want to have the resources available to continue doing your work. We know you want to continue contributing to the health of your communities. We will continue to listen to all our members and all the stakeholders in the clinical and translational research effort and we will continue to build bridges that open new routes towards our end goal of improving health.

August M. Watanabe Prize in Translational Research
Indiana University School of Medicine is pleased to award the August M. Watanabe Prize in Translational Research. The prize is one of the nation’s largest and most prestigious awards, recognizing individuals focused on shepherding scientific discoveries into new therapies for patients. The prize is awarded to a senior investigator who has made a significant contribution to the field of translational science. The winner will receive $100,000 and will spend September 14-16, 2022 in Indianapolis, as a vising dignitary, sharing insights and knowledge with audiences at IU School of Medicine and its partner institutions.
Nominees for the August M. Watanabe Prize in Translational Research should be members of the scientific or medical community who have demonstrated outstanding accomplishments in translational research.
