Letter From the President
At the invitation of Drs. Martinez-Gonzalez and Segarra-Vazquez, I had the honor of visiting the Hispanic Clinical and Translational Research Education and Career Development (HCTRECD) program at the University of Puerto Rico Medical Sciences Campus (UPR-MSC) for a meeting on novel methodologies. The meeting was held at an iconic hotel in San Juan. During my visit, I vividly remembered attending many conferences there, giving presentations, meeting people whose work I had been reading about and enjoying the cultural experience. While my first conference there was in 1986, I’ve been back over a dozen times, throughout my career—mostly for the same two conferences. As time went on, I have attended with my mentees, rather than only with my mentor; she introduced me to the leaders in the field of substance abuse, and they introduced me to their mentees, and we all became life-long friends. Having not been to this venue for a while due to hurricane damage, I was thrilled to see it so vibrant. As I walked about, I felt the presence of my academic ancestors, who influenced me so much. Attending the program that week, I thought about all of the collaborations I have been involved in—both domestically and internationally—many of which began right there at that venue. I felt so lucky to have been exposed to that venue and to the people whose presence I felt all week. I had a tinge of Imposter Syndrome, being the senior leader who was presenting a keynote and critiquing the fellows’ research methods. I was impressed by their mentoring mosaic approaches, and advanced and novel methodologies. I realized there are so many programs of excellence like this and I hope that the trainees from each center join ACTS and volunteer to be on committees so that they can meet people in their field and form life-long relationships.

Lasker Clinical Research Scholars Program
The National Institutes of Health, in partnership with the Lasker Foundation, is pleased to announce the 2023-24 Lasker Clinical Research Scholars Program. The program supports clinical researchers in the early stages of their independent careers. Lasker Scholars are appointed as tenure-track investigators in the NIH Intramural Research Program for 5 years, followed by 3 years of funding at an extramural research institution (up to $500,000 direct costs per year) or continued appointment in the intramural program. Candidates must have a clinical doctoral degree and a professional license to practice in the United States, and cannot already have obtained tenure at a research institution. The application deadline is August 25, 2023.
