Letter from the JCTS Editor
I was glad to meet so many inspiring friends, old and new, at our incredible Translational Science meeting earlier this month. I was blown away by the passion and the vision that was on display, with conversations going far beyond individual scientific questions to strategies for developing individual careers, research programs, infrastructures, and specialties – all with the goal of creating healthy and vibrant communities. It was truly exhilarating to be part of these discussions.
I was also reminded time and again of the power of words and how much they truly matter. For us, many of our words are published in the pages of scientific journals, and I was thrilled to talk to so many of you about the publication process and working with our dedicated editors.
Journal editors play a crucial role in upholding the integrity of published research. In addition to managing the scientific review process, they often guide authors in improving the clarity and impact of their research. They are also instrumental in setting standards for what gets published and providing insightful commentary on published works to provide context and emphasis. The opportunity to shape scientific dialogue is truly an honor.
At the Journal of Clinical and Translational Science, we have an exceptional Editorial Board, each member of which is deeply committed to ensuring that scientifically valid and impactful research reaches the public. We meet regularly to discuss editorial standards and review processes, identify emerging areas of clinical and translational science for thematic issues, and explore ways to grow clinical and translational science through the support of a vibrant, high-impact journal with an active editorial and reviewer community.
If you are passionate about mentoring scientists in publishing their work, contributing to scientific dialogue and direction, and engaging with our dynamic community, we will soon be expanding our editorial board. Keep an eye out for the call for applications. In addition to a call for editorial board members, we will also be expanding the role of the journal as a vehicle for learning about peer review, editorships, and scientific publication. I look forward to updating you on these activities in the summer.
It is truly inspiring to have such strong support from our Editorial Board as we move forward with these exciting initiatives, and I hope that you will consider joining us as we strive to make a lasting impact on the scientific community and beyond.
PhRMA Foundation 2025 Research Funding
There's still time to submit a letter of intent to receive a 2025 research grant from the PhRMA Foundation! Predoctoral and postdoctoral fellowships and faculty starter grants are available to trainees pursuing research in the areas of drug discovery, drug delivery, and translational medicine. Predocs receive $30,000 a year for two years, postdocs receive $60,000 a year for two years, and faculty receive $100,000 for one year. The letter of intent deadline is 12:00 p.m. (noon) ET on May 1, 2024.
Translational Science 2025: Save the Date
It's never too early to start making plans! Translational Science 2025 will take us back to Washington, DC from April 15th to 17th, 2025, with pre-meeting activities on April 14th. Don't miss your next chance to connect with old colleagues, meet some new faces, and learn about all the new developments taking place in translational research.

An SC CTSI-supported study evaluated an innovative new procedure clinic in Los Angeles for predominately low-income Latino outpatients with cirrhosis, and its success is lessening demand on the emergency department an urban, safety-net hospital.

Researchers highlight and share applications of clinical science in everyday life during annual CCTS conference
The 19th Annual Spring Conference of the UK Center for Clinical and Translational Science (CCTS) drew it's largest-ever audience, with nearly 1,100 attendees including a particularly special guest: Lexington Mayor Linda Gorton, who issued a proclamation that April 9 is "Translational Science Day" in the city.
