Letter From the JCTS Editor: Partnership and Visibility
As many of us return to work after the traditional vacation period leading up to Labor Day, I am happy to share some exciting news. Recently, we were notified that the Journal of Clinical and Translational Science (JCTS) has been accepted for inclusion in Scopus, the abstract and citation database managed by Elsevier, that draws on data and linked scholarly literature across a wide variety of disciplines. Once all details are worked out, all recently accepted manuscripts will generally be listed in the Scopus Title list within 1 month after acceptance. Shortly after this positive message, we were also notified that JCTS has been selected for inclusion in the Web of Science, Emerging Sources Citation Index (ESCI). This means that once the onboarding process is completed, articles published in JCTS after January 1, 2017 will be included in the ESCI. Both these actions represent major advances and attest to the increased visibility and prominence of the journal. Above all, they are indications of the quality of our accepted manuscripts and the valuable contributions from all our authors. In addition, this is a step towards addition into Science Citation Index Expanded, or SCIE, which is one of the indices that award the Impact Factor. We will continue to work hard to build on this strong foundation.
The impact of COVID-19 on the scientific community continues to be a common theme for submissions, and this was also the subject of a thematic issue published earlier in the year. Examples of this continued interest among recent publications is a paper by Jaime Doyle and co-workers from NCATS and the University of Pittsburgh on the impact of the pandemic on under-represented early PhD and physician scientists. Han-Gang Yu and colleagues from West Virginia University describe a cell-free test that detect SARS-CoV-2 in blood samples from COVID-19 infected individuals, supporting their hypothesis that the virus can spread to the heart via blood circulation, while Holly Taylor and colleagues from NIH and several universities report on IRB review of COVID-19 research early in the pandemic. The impact of the pandemic on Clinical Research Units is reported by Maran Subramain and colleagues from the University of Iowa. We look forward to additional reports on the impact and experiences with COVID-19.
I also want to highlight a recent call for papers for a JCTS thematic issue on Health and Social Drivers in the Criminal Justice System. This themed issue intends to provide critical updates to important research among people with criminal justice involvement with articles varying from epidemiology of chronic illness and COVID-19, compassionate release, mental health, and more. We hope contributions will help refine the research agenda, measures, methods, and training opportunities needed to advance research on the health and social drivers of criminal justice involvement and health disparities among CTSA affiliated investigators. With the recent emphasis on the role of correctional facilities on outbreaks and disease transmission for COVID-19, there is an even more urgent need to better understand disease risk mitigation and the drivers of health disparities. The deadline for submissions is March 1, 2022.

News From the Hill: September 22, 2021
Congress returned from the truncated August recess, but the Senate did not immediately begin the process to markup its nine remaining Fiscal Year (FY) 2022 appropriations bill. While the House has advanced its version of the FY 2022 Labor-HHS-Education spending measure, which funds the National Institutes of Health along with other medical research and public health programs, that is one of the measures still awaiting parallel action in the Senate.
