Letter From the President: Future Perspectives
Part of my first message to you all is to say a few words about you: thank you for being a part of the Translational Workforce. Thanks to all who attended our first in-person conference in three years! It was invigorating to hear so many discussions about science, personal adventures, challenges and achievements. Mostly it was wonderful to see you in 3D instead of on a screen. It really helped me realize how far we have come.
Secondly, I want to say thanks to our outgoing Past President Chris Lindsell. He has done a lot for the organization. He onboarded and shared valuable information with me that is passed down from President to President. Thank you Chris for your enlightenment and patience. Thanks also to our outgoing President Karen Martinez-Gonzalez. Karen’s work is so similar to mine so we are kindred spirits in the theme of translational areas. She is always solution-oriented and always stepping up at critical moments with excellent research ideas.
Our organization is thriving thanks to the commitment and dedication of people at Smithbucklin (ACTS staff). Kim Wiatr’s leadership is the glue that holds us all together and the entire ACTS staff team in their assistance with TS22 and throughout the year. As I begin my year as your ACTS President, I want to share with you my ideas for ACTS growth. At the end of the year, we can see how well we did. This year, I would like to:
Increase the diversity of our members—in terms of sex, geographic distribution, discipline, ethnicity, and profession—so that all staff, faculty and students can contribute to the association.
Strengthen the relationship and communication between the NIH institutes most closely aligned to our work and our organization.
Involve association members in the business of the organization to encompass as many ideas as possible for the growth of ACTS, by strongly supporting the SIGS in all they do.
Begin a strategic planning process that will catapult the ACTS to make even greater contributions.
If we are successful with some of these goals, we will have some great outcomes, including being the go-to meeting for translational science and being a diverse organization that values everyone’s discipline and role. Thank you again for helping to make TS22 one of our best meetings.

Save the Date: Translational Science 2023
ACTS and its partners are looking forward to connecting in Washington, DC for Translational Science 2023, taking place April 19-21, 2023.
Additional details, including information on abstract and scientific programming submissions, as well as registration, will be available in the coming months.
Lasker Clinical Research Scholars Program
The National Institutes of Health, in partnership with the Lasker Foundation, is pleased to announce the 2022-23 Lasker Clinical Research Scholars Program. The program supports clinical researchers in the early stages of their careers, to promote their development to fully independent positions. Lasker Scholars are appointed as independent, tenure-track level investigators in the NIH Intramural Research Program for 5 years, followed by 3 years of funding at an extramural research institution (up to $500,000 direct costs per year) or continued appointment in the intramural program. Candidates must have a clinical doctoral degree and a professional license to practice in the United States, and cannot already have obtained tenure at a research institution. The application deadline is June 24, 2022.
