Letter From the JCTS Editor: Expansion and More Options
We are finally getting into summer and all of us are surely taking a deep breath and exhaling with a sense of relief. The kids are getting a well deserved summer break and will most likely return to school in the fall, their exhausted parents can perhaps see a light at the end of the tunnel and our colleagues are returning to their laboratories and offices in full force. We can start thinking more about future projects and less about the immediate daily concerns with social distancing, masks and other critical but in the end somewhat tiresome measures. I am very happy to report that during the year, JCTS is continuing its strong growth trajectory. We are receiving submissions of many interesting papers and to further expand the options available for authors, we have introduced several new manuscript categories, suggested by our community. We now offer the opportunity to submit Conference Proceedings. These are intended for summaries of conferences or meetings focused on clinical and translational science that include a broad constituency. This could for example include a summary of presentations of a national or regional meeting where the content is deemed of general interest. Another novel opportunity is the format of Translational Science Case Studies that describe and discuss the value of a clinical or translational science intervention, including the health problem addressed, the intervention’s scope, and its impact on clinical care, public health, or policy. We are grateful to our audience for suggestions like these that undoubtedly will serve to enrich the content of JCTS.
As the JCTS submission rate increases, we remain fully committed to respond to authors in a timely manner. Our Reviewers and Editorial Board members have stepped up to the plate and we recognize their commitment and support and the high quality of their work. To be able to maintain a brisk turnover rate, there is a need to expand our Editorial Board. To meet this need, we have asked institutions throughout the country to nominate colleagues who are interested in joining the Board. The opportunity is open until July 1 and I would like again to remind our readers and colleagues of this opportunity.
The JCTS Editorial Board also include a number of Junior Editors. We are in the process of changing the guard here as a number of our current group are completing their terms. We have worked with Doris Rubio at the University of Pittsburgh, a JCTS Editorial Board member, to elicit a call for interested applicants which closed in the middle of the month. We have received a number of high quality applications and will make a selection in the coming weeks. We hope this will be an interesting and rewarding activity as the junior editors will assist with reviews and other journal activities. Doris and I want to thank the KL2 Program Leaders who distributed the call and those who nominated candidates for their support.
On that positive note, I wish everyone a restful summer and hope that we all can celebrate what seems to be an end to the worst of the COVID challenge. Continued vigilance is needed so please celebrate with caution and continue to protect each other.
