Letter From the President: Future Perspectives
I just finished writing a 200-page book of personal stories. Laura, our middle daughter, gave me a Mother’s Day gift last year to facilitate writing “Stories of Lindy”. The company that sells such a gift would send me a random question each Monday to answer. Examples were: At what times were you happiest? What is some of the best advice you got from a parent? Have you ever won anything? Who is the wisest person you have known? What is one of your go-to stories you like telling over and over? As I was thinking about what to write this month, I thought of my book of stories and how much I loved doing it because it gave me the chance to think about things in my life that I have not had the chance to think about for a long time, or ever. I love writing and editing but how often do I get to do it when it is not work-related? Not often. But this gave me the opportunity to write, edit, and even match photos to these stories. I thought about how valuable something like this could be for mentors. How great it would be for busy investigators like us to take the time to remind ourselves and our team of our legacy, of people we have worked with, of our successes and challenges, of tips for our lab, and ideas that have guided our careers. It could be something that, in certain times of our lives, would fill a need of documenting our stories forever. Storytelling is a special thing and a fun way to express ourselves. As we think about our own labs, or the conferences we attend, we should consider a TED hour and workshops on writing. In the meantime, I thank my daughter for giving me something other than work to do in the evenings.
