Letter From the President

In the past two years, we had to tolerate much more uncertainty than usual. As clinical and translational researchers, we understand that there is always a degree of error in our scientific findings. However, juggling the degree of uncertainty caused by the COVID-19 pandemic in making decisions for our families, our workplaces and ourselves has been a daunting task. We continue immersed in this uncertainty as we prepare for Translational Science 2022.

We are excited to have a final scientific program that we are certain will meet the expectations of all our members. Our meeting will continue to have all the core activities such as Mock Study and Advocacy Training. This year we are highlighting the work of our special interest groups and have a special session where they will be able to present the state of the field of each group. Our program will follow topic tracks such as community engagement, diversity, equity and inclusion, workforce development and education, and valued approaches.

We have been continuously monitoring the COVID-19 mandates in Chicago to be able to provide a safe and productive environment for all our members. We will also livestream some of our sessions as we understand that some of our members will not be able to travel to Chicago. However, our in-person experience will certainly provide an opportunity to connect and interact that online venues have just not been able to substitute.

If you are still uncertain about traveling to Chicago for our annual meeting, we understand. Many of us are not sure if we want to go back to hectic travel schedules after these two years of online meetings. Our meeting will be a great starting point to discuss how we see collaborations and interactions changing with what we have learned with the pandemic.

PHRMA Funding Opportunity in Translational Medicine

The PhRMA Foundation’s 2022 Translational Medicine Award program offers postdoctoral fellowships and research starter grants to deserving researchers focused on developing solutions to complex clinical problems.

The goal of the program is to promote the development of an integrative approach that addresses clinical needs in diagnosis, treatment and prevention using both experimental and computational methods. Translational Medicine awards will advance training and support career development of early-career scientists engaged in research that significantly addresses specific clinician-defined problems and integrates innovative technologies with advanced biological, chemical, and pharmacological sciences and engineering methodologies.

The application portal for this year’s PhRMA Foundation Translational Medicine awards is now open and applications are due today, February 10, 2022 at 11:59 PM EST. Recipients of awards will be notified no later than April 15, 2022. Postdoctoral fellowships are provided for two years and offer $60,000 in stipend support per year. Research starter grants are provided for one year and offer funding of $100,000.
