Letter From the President

Happy Day! As your ACTS President I wanted to let you know about several events that will be occurring the week of Translational Science 2023 (TS23) that I think you might be interested in hearing about. First, there is the National Cherry Blossom Festival—it ends April 16th, right before TS23. I hope there will be a Yoshino cherry tree around town that still has a blossom on it, but if not, there may be some on the ground to enjoy. You can check out the #BloomCam to see the Tidal Basin live at BLOOM WATCH - National Cherry Blossom Festival.  This offers 24/7 views of the Basin. Monday, the 17th, is National Crawfish Day. There are several restaurants that serve crawfish right around the Hilton. The 18th of April is National Columnists Day, which aligns with our breaking news on translational science.  On this day, I hope that members will use all of their social media acumen to share our findings with colleagues around the world.  National Banana Day is Wednesday, the 19th of April. Be sure to grab a yellow fruit for breakfast to get your potassium.  On our last day of TS23 will be National High Five Day AND Volunteer Recognition Day. On this day, we can each give a salute to and recognize those ACTS members who are Program Planning Committee Chair (Vicki Ellingrod) and Co-Chair (Joyce Balls-Berry), along with the full committee of volunteers.  They will certainly deserve our thanks for what will have been a terrific schedule of scientific presentations.

See you soon in DC.  And as an added bonus—today (April 13th) is National Peach Cobbler Day. Enjoy!

News From the Hill: March 31, 2023

In mid-March, the Biden administration kicked off the ceremonially start to the annual budget and appropriations process with the release for the Fiscal Year (FY) 2024 President’s Budget Request to Congress. The non-binding document serves to outline administration priorities as Congress works on corresponding spending bills. This year, the request outlines a reinvigoration of the Cancer Moonshot while calling for further funding for medical research and public heath programs (though skewing that request toward public health due to the fact that medical research continues to have strong bipartisan support on Capitol Hill).
