Letter From the President

With this letter I say good-bye as ACTS President. It has been an honor for me to guide our association during this last year as we evolve into a new phase with the COVID-19 pandemic. It is thrilling to be able to end my presidency with our in-person meeting in Chicago. I do know some of you will join us virtually but at this time our registration is overwhelmingly greater for the in-person meeting. Please remember that we will have our annual business meeting on Friday, April 22 at 7:15 AM CT virtually and in-person.

During this year, I have focused on improving the structure of our committees and emphasizing the value of membership. As ACTS members, we want you to make the most of your affiliation to our association. During TS22, take advantage of our activities sponsored by the special interest groups. Throughout next year, be aware of our webinars as well as our award opportunities and calls for submissions for both our annual meeting and special issues of our journal, JCTS.

At TS22, we transition to the excellent leadership of who will be our president, Dr. Linda Cottler. She has already led us towards a wonderful scientific program for TS22 as our Program Committee chair. In addition, as President-Elect she has had active participation in our Executive, Parliamentary and Financial committees during this last year. This process of introducing all aspects of the association as President-Elect allows the President to be fully immersed in our needs and direction. In our May newsletter, we will be hearing from Dr. Cottler and all her plans for this next year.

We have shown so much perseverance as clinical and translational researchers during this past year. We have produced great work, some of which will be presented at TS22 and highlighted at our awards ceremony. I transition from the presidency with all this energy and dedication to improving the lives of our patients and participants in an equitable manner. I look forward to my future years in ACTS, my professional home for innovative ideas on how to evolve the clinical and translational science endeavor.

Karen G. Martinez-Gonzalez, MD, MSc

Lasker Clinical Research Scholars Program

The National Institutes of Health, in partnership with the Lasker Foundation, is pleased to announce the 2022-23 Lasker Clinical Research Scholars Program. The program supports clinical researchers in the early stages of their careers, to promote their development to fully independent positions. Lasker Scholars are appointed as independent, tenure-track level investigators in the NIH Intramural Research Program for 5 years, followed by 3 years of funding at an extramural research  institution (up to $500,000 direct costs per year) or continued appointment in the intramural program.  Candidates must have a clinical doctoral degree and a professional license to practice in the United States, and cannot already have obtained tenure at a research institution. The application deadline is June 24, 2022.

More information can be obtained at the Lasker Scholar website, or by contacting Dr. Chuck Dearolf at LaskerScholar@nih.gov.
